School summary

Spanning the full journey from age two to eighteen, Sherrardswood is a small independent school in Welwyn, Hertfordshire, where the modest roll of around 467 pupils allows children to be known as individuals. The Independent Schools Inspectorate rated the school 'good', and singled out personal development as 'excellent' - a sign that pastoral care and character sit at the heart of school life. Parents should note, however, that the ISI found compliance standards were not met at inspection, which is worth raising directly with the school. With a sixth form of 72, this is an intimate community rather than a large institution.

Teaching & academics

Pupils work towards GCSEs before progressing to a sixth form that combines A-levels with BTEC options and the Extended Project Qualification, giving older students both academic and more vocationally minded routes. The 'good' ISI judgement points to sound teaching across the school. The small scale means class sizes are likely to be contained and individual attention more readily available.

Watch Passmate decide how to teach.

Answer as a child would. Left: what they see. Right: what it learns about them.

A small, all-through school whose strongest suit is the personal development of its pupils. The unmet compliance finding is the one point parents will want to clarify before applying.

That’s where Passmate comes in. Tutoring is the most effective thing in a child’s preparation - a well-tutored child can outperform the vast majority of their peers. Passmate works alongside your tutor, not instead of them: it learns how your child thinks, finds the gaps, and shows the tutor exactly where to spend each session - so the limited time you have lands on what actually decides a place.

Works alongside your child’s tutor - not instead of them.
