School summary

Westminster Under School is a small, independent preparatory school for boys aged 7 to 13 in Westminster, with a Church of England character and around 279 pupils on roll. Its standout feature is an exceptionally low pupil-to-teacher ratio of about seven, allowing a degree of individual attention that larger schools struggle to match. Teaching & academics

An ISI rating of excellent, paired with a pupil-to-teacher ratio of roughly seven, points to teaching that can be tailored closely to each boy. Around 10 per cent of pupils receive SEN support, indicating the school accommodates a range of needs alongside its academic ambitions. With 11+ entry in place, parents should expect a selective, stretching setting.

Beyond the classroom

The school runs a Platform Pups programme, working with local state primaries to identify bright children who would benefit from Saturday morning stretching sessions. This outreach also feeds into expanding bursary provision, widening access beyond those who can meet the full fees.

Mobile phone policy

(Older) boys who travel to or from school without parents are permitted to bring mobile phones to school. When arriving at school, boys are encouraged to send their parents a text to say that they have arrived safely. They will then be required to turn off their mobile phone (that is powered off rather than screen off) and put their phone into their locker until the end of the school day. Boys may turn their phones on as they are leaving and again, we encourage them to send parents a text to say that they are on their way.

Watch Passmate decide how to teach.

Answer as a child would. Left: what they see. Right: what it learns about them.

A small, selective boys' prep in the heart of Westminster where an unusually low pupil-to-teacher ratio underpins an excellent ISI verdict. Best suited to families wanting close attention and academic rigour in a central London setting.

That’s where Passmate comes in. Tutoring is the most effective thing in a child’s preparation - a well-tutored child can outperform the vast majority of their peers. Passmate works alongside your tutor, not instead of them: it learns how your child thinks, finds the gaps, and shows the tutor exactly where to spend each session - so the limited time you have lands on what actually decides a place.

Works alongside your child’s tutor - not instead of them.
