Part of the Girls' Day School Trust and founded in 1878, Northampton High School educates girls from age two through to eighteen in West Northamptonshire. It is a small school of around 354 pupils, with just 81 in the sixth form, and a generous pupil-to-teacher ratio of about 12 to one that allows close attention to each girl. The Independent Schools Inspectorate rated the school excellent across the board, including for personal development, and found it met all compliance requirements. With more than a quarter of pupils receiving SEN support, the school appears used to tailoring its teaching to a range of needs.

Teaching & academics
Results sit well above national averages: 58 per cent of GCSE grades reach 9-7, compared with a national figure of 23 per cent, and at A-level 40 per cent of entries achieve A*-A against a national average of 28 per cent. The sciences feature strongly at both GCSE and A-level, alongside humanities, languages and creative subjects such as art, drama and music. Sixth-formers can take the Extended Project Qualification beyond their A-levels, and the breadth of popular subjects suggests pupils are not steered narrowly down one path.

A range of after-school clubs and a late prep session from 4pm to 5pm support girls beyond the classroom, with mobile phones set aside throughout. French, German and Spanish are all taught, giving language-minded pupils plenty of scope.

Mobile phone policy
Pupils are allowed to bring mobile phones to and from school to always ensure their personal safety. Pupils must not use their mobile device anywhere in school during the school day, except under the specific direction of a member of staff. There is a no mobile phone policy at school from 8am to 3.35pm. Parents are asked not to text or call their children on mobiles during the school day. If they need to relay a message to their children, they should contact the school reception, and that message will be passed on. In addition, mobile phones are not permitted at afterschool clubs and at late prep (4pm to 5pm).
